Freedom on the Grand: The Voice of Sophia Pooley
Today, we are all technically born free. Yet, how often is our own pursuit of happiness—a different kind of freedom—held captive by a similar detachment from the systems that govern our lives? Our potential can be shackled by ignorance of the law, a poor understanding of financial literacy, or a lack of civic knowledge. We may settle for "common knowledge" when it is "applicable knowledge" that truly sets us free.

To carry on a legacy of "change for the better," we must give voice to those who were silenced. We must acknowledge that the resilience and contributions of enslaved individuals like Sophia Pooley are as fundamental to the story of this region as the political achievements of the leaders who enslaved them.
