When we began this work, one question came up again and again in our community conversations:
"Does our story matter here?"
Our answer is an emphatic yes.
Our local Black history is not a footnote. It is woven into the very fabric of Brant County—in the names of our streets, in the foundations of our oldest churches, and in the stories of the trailblazers who built lives here.
We believe that to "insert equity back into justice," we must first know our own history. We have to celebrate the pioneers, understand the struggles, and honour the places that shaped our community.
That's why we are so excited to announce a new monthly series.
Announcing: The Brant County Black History Spotlight
Starting this October 2024, we will be publishing a new post every month dedicated to a person, place, or event that defines the rich Black history of Brant County and its surrounding areas.
We'll explore the legacy of local legends, uncover the stories of key landmarks, and build a public archive that proves just how deep our roots go.
Our plan is to run this series every month, leading us right into Black History Month in February 2025, where we can all celebrate this shared heritage together.
It's proof that our story not only matters—it's essential. We invite you to follow along, share these stories, and help us build this archive.
